Statement of Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum Georgian National Platform onRefusal of Government of Georgia to € 75 million of the EU AidEastern Partnership Civil Society Forum Georgian National Platform (Georgian NationalPlatform) is concerned about the inconsistent policy of the Government of Georgia (GoG).

Taking into consideration the GoG’s goal to apply for EU membership in 2024, it is not clear why the government refused to receive significant EU aid that would help the countryachieve its goals, such as: strengthening the management of public finances in the wake ofCOVID-19 pandemic, improving governance, implementation of judicial reform, fightingagainst corruption, supporting the business environment and implementation of otherimportant reforms.

It is not right to discuss this issue only from a technical point of view that will negativelyimpact the relationsbetween the EU and Georgia. We consider it unacceptable for the GoG to take a step that is politically dangerous, in linewith the GoG’s interests and harmful to the country, which meanwhile contradicts EuroAtlantic perspective for Georgia.

Considering that the threats posed by the Russian Federation are alarming in the light ofrecent developments in the region, we are carefully watching the significant negativeimpact of Russia’s hard and soft power on Georgian society and believe that the onlysolution is Euro-Atlantic choice and path leading to welfare of the population of Georgia. We believe that the EU should further strengthen the civil sector taking into considerationthe GoG’s inconsistencies in Euro-Atlantic integration.

We urge the GoG to take political and state responsibility and to fulfill all the commitmentsundertaken by Georgia towards the EU.
